WMS stands for Web Map Service. It is a standardised format for the exchange of geographic data. WMS is a web service that delivers an image in jpg, gif or svg formats. The WMS format is defined by the OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) and can be read by the most common GIS platforms. With a new function in DP/Spatial, data can be exposed as a WMS and displayed in Google Earth, to give an example.
The DP/Spatial WMS was one of the services that was tested in an inter-operability project carried out by the City of Stockholm.
For an example of a WMS production, go to:

An example of a request for services that would deliver an image is:
http://fpp.digpro.se/bios/servlet/bios.servlets.web.wms.WMS?VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&SRS=EPSG:4326&WIDTH=512&HEIGHT=512&FORMAT=image/png&BBOX=18.05,59.31,18.07,59.32
The WMS service was developed in DP/Spatial, the Digpro basic platform, an application built on the Oracle Spatial database and java-based web clients.
